FADE IN:

Hear the sound of a radio being tuned from station to station.

INT: APARTMENT – PRESENT DAY

Camera pans to find ROXANNE angrily switching radio stations. Loud pounding from apartment door. ROXANNE turns radio off. Simultaneously, ENRIQUE bursts in through the door.

ENRIQUE

Once upon a midnight deary I woke with something in my head. I couldn’t escape the memory, of a phone call and of what you said. Like a game show contestant with a parting gift I could not believe my eyes, when I saw through the voice of a trusting friend who needs to humor me and tell me lies. Yes, humor me and tell me lies.

ROXANNE

(scowls with contempt)

I got a new life. You would hardly recognize me. I’m so glad. How can a person like me care for you? Why do I bother, when you’re not the one for me? Is enough enough? I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes. I saw the sign! Life is demanding without understanding.

(During this line she is pulling a red dress over her blue jeans)

(BILLY bursts into view wearing a fast food uniform complete with Mc Donald’s hat, proof that he has a new job)

BILLY

Roxanne! You don’t have to put on that red light. Those days are over. You don’t have to sell your body to the night.

(She ignores him and begins applying a great deal of lipstick. He continues to plead)

Roxanne! You don’t have to wear that dress tonight. Walk the streets for money. You don’t care if it’s wrong or if it’s right.

ROXANNE

(To BILLY, caressing his face)

Like, anyone would be, I am flattered by your fascination with me. Like any hot-blooded woman I have simply wanted an object to crave.

(To ENRIQUE)

But you, you’re not allowed, you’re uninvited. An unfortunate slight.

BILLY

(To ENRIQUE, in passionate defense of ROXANNE)

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears.

(Inspired)

And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair. I hear the sound of a gentle word on the wind that lifts her perfume through the air.

(Circles ROXANNE, and speaks these words directly to her)

I’m picking up good vibrations. She’s giving me excitations.

(Each of the following ‘GOOD’s needs to have its own feeling of intense love and passion incorporated)

Good, good, good, good vibrations.

(He crumples and falls to the ground near ROXANNE)

ENRIQUE

(The following monologue is ENRIQUE’S final attempt at getting ROXANNE back. He has thought long and hard about this, and will lay everything on the line, throwing himself at ROXANNE’S mercy. As BILLY’S line is finishing, ENRIQUE takes a couple steps toward ROXANNE)

Would you dance, if I asked you dance? Would you run, and never look back? Would you cry, if you saw me crying?

(He steps close enough to take ROXANNE’S hand and place it over his heart).

Would you save my soul tonight?

(He steps forward very close to ROXANNE, and touches her lips with one finger. He holds ROXANNE in a trance. Even BILLY is spellbound by his charm).

Would you tremble, if I touched your lips? Would you laugh,

(turns in angst)

Oh please tell me this!

(very grave)

Now you would die, for the one you love…

(moment of truth)

Hold me in your arms tonight.

(ROXANNE is torn! BILLY sits near her feet; eyes darting back and forth between ROXANNE and ENRIQUE like an abused puppy. ENRIQUE sees her uncertainty and moves in for the kill)

I can be your hero baby. I can kiss away the pain. I will stand by you…forever. You…can…take…my breath away.

ROXANNE

You look like a fool to me. Tell me, why’d you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you’re acting like you’re somebody else. Gets me frustrated! Life’s like this: You fall, and you crawl, and you break and you take what you get and you turn it into honesty. You promised me I’m never gonna find you fake it.

(ENRIQUE draws near)

No, No, No.

(ROXANNE points at the door, and ENRIQUE exits in dramatic haste).

(The passion has climaxed and BILLY throws himself at ROXANNE’S feet. In all haste, BILLY tears from his pocket, a tiny box, from which he produces a ring. As he’s slipping it on ROXANNE’S finger, she is near tears and BILLY gazes deep into her eyes)

BILLY

It’s a nice day for a…white wedding.

ROXANNE

(equally smitten, and as ROXANNE looks up from her lover, she gazes into the horizon)

It’s a nice day to…start again.

(Scene fades to score of BILLY IDOL’S, WHITE WEDDING)
